Organized in 1976 by two retired missionaries of the Congregation of the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ, Fr. Mat Martin CP and Edward Mansmann CP brought home to America the memories of over 50 years ministry in totally marginalized communities oppressed by many curable childhood diseases. Sharing these memories the two retired Passionists were emotionally stirred to again respond to God’s call and reach out to the Catholic Community of the United States to educate and inspire a people of plenty to provide for children with too little to live on and no medication!!! The two founding priests soon were speaking in Passionists Priests were speaking to Catholic school children and various Parish Groups all over the United States, prompting Fr. Edward to respond, “Not Retired Anymore!I” Soon the two RETIRED priests were joined, by two retired missionary nuns, and in their retirement added a spontaneity and vibrance that doubled and tripled the workload. An all volunteer association Called the Catholic Medical Mission Association became a bigger reality than anyone had imagined as Sr. Mary Pontillo MPF and Sr. Margaret Healey SHS brought a powerful connection to groups of medical nursing nuns in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the West Indies. The HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 1980s brought with it a massive unrelenting call for help. The need for health care services, medications, personnel and child care facilities/orphanages was overwhelming, and many more missionaries returned to America nearly shell shocked from their experiences abroad. This led to a new phase of growth and purpose for our Mission in Ministry.
Returning from Uganda and Kenya in Sub-Saharan Africa, Sr. Susan McGrath SMG and Brother Robert Somogy joined the CMMA and created Project Bread for Life. A program for Catholic Parishes to host combining a learning experience for religious education students, and practical charity program of selling bread in parishes to support the provisions of much needed medications for religious communities supplying medical services to combat the AIDS Pandemic.
Today this program continues, and is tailored to respond to the very specific needs of participating missionary communities as requested.
